Al Meezan Investments KSE Meezan Index Fund (KMIF)
Islamic Investing in Balochistan
Open-end index tracker of the KMI-30, Pakistan's benchmark Shariah-compliant equity index, from Al Meezan: Rs 8.23 billion at June 30, 2026, launched May 2012. It keeps at least 85% of assets in index constituents and charges 0.75% actual (band 0-1%), a quarter of the flagship active fund's 3%; FY26 returned +38.09% against the index's +39.18%, a 1.1-point gap. Entry is Rs 5,000 initial / Rs 1,000 subsequent with fully digital and Roshan Digital Account onboarding, under the same Taqi Usmani-chaired board and published six-screen methodology as the rest of the shelf. The flaw is the 2% front-end load - a charge neither PSX Islamic ETF carries - which erodes the passive cost case in year one.
For investors who want index returns without opening a brokerage account, KMIF is the cleanest tool in Pakistan: genuine KMI-30 replication, a 1.1-point FY26 tracking gap, and Rs 5,000 digital onboarding backed by Al Meezan's governance. The 2% front-end load is the sore point - it exists nowhere in the ETF versions of this same exposure and erodes the passive cost argument in year one. If you already have (or will open) a PSX brokerage account, the Meezan Pakistan ETF or Mahaana's MIIETF deliver similar screening with zero load; if app-based fund investing is as far as you'll go, KMIF remains the best passive halal equity building block on any open-end shelf.
Pros
- Closest open-end tracking of the KMI-30 available (-1.1pp in FY26) without needing a brokerage account
- 0.75% fee makes the case against 3% active funds that trailed the same index by more
- Thirteen-year passive track record under the market's most senior Shariah board
- Rs 8.23 billion of assets and a 2012 vintage make it Pakistan's established open-end halal index vehicle, not an experiment
Cons
- 2% front-end load on a passive fund - both PSX Islamic ETFs (MZNPETF, MIIETF) charge no load at all
- Slightly costlier headline fee than the firm's own ETF (0.75% vs 0.50%)
- FY26's 1.1-point tracking gap is good but not free - fee plus load still cost real return against direct index exposure

Why It's Halal
KMIF is the open-end way to own the KMI-30, the benchmark index of Shariah-compliant Pakistani equities. Constituents must pass all six published screens - halal core business, interest-bearing debt below 37% of total assets, non-compliant investments below 33%, non-compliant income below 5% of revenue (purified pro-rata as charity), illiquid assets of at least 25%, and market price above net liquid assets per share - and Al Meezan, which maintains the KMI-30 recomposition list, keeps the fund at least 85% invested in index constituents. Governance is the firm's named three-scholar board chaired by Justice (Retd.) Mufti Muhammad Taqi Usmani. As passive halal exposure it did its job in FY26: +38.09% against the index's +39.18%, a ~1.1 point gap consistent with its 0.75% fee. The wrinkle is the 2% front-end load - unusual for a passive product and absent from both PSX-listed Islamic ETFs - which means a first-year investor effectively starts 2% behind an ETF buyer of near-identical exposure.
